Taproot Institute

Taproot Institute is our answer to the complex world of Community Benefits Agreements, offering community groups the tools, templates, and training they need to navigate negotiations with private developers and cities. We know that these agreements can be transformative, ensuring new developments bring real, lasting benefits—like affordable housing, living wages, and open, accessible space—directly to the people who call these neighborhoods home. Through workshops, accessible resources, and one-on-one guidance, Taproot Institute helps demystify the process so communities can advocate for themselves with confidence and clarity. This is just one piece of the arts ecosystem we’re nurturing, recognizing that creative communities need not just inspiration, but real power at the table. With Taproot, we’re rooting justice and equity into every new project, one agreement at a time.

Next Steps

1. Community Engagement & Feedback

We will continue holding workshops and providing resources to deepen community understanding of Community Benefits Agreements. Ongoing input will be gathered to ensure our tools meet the evolving needs of local groups.

2. Building Capacity, Partnerships & Fundraising

We will expand training sessions and provide one-on-one guidance to strengthen community negotiating power. This includes developing partnerships with organizations and skilled volunteers to enhance support. Alongside these efforts, fundraising will be a critical focus to secure resources needed for the successful launch and sustainability of the initiative. Activities will include:

  • Identifying potential funding sources and donors

  • Creating targeted fundraising campaigns aligned with our mission

  • Engaging community members and partners in fundraising efforts

  • Leveraging pro bono and volunteer support strategically

3. Advisory Board Formation

A critical next step is the convening of the advisory board, which will include community leaders, experts, and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds. This advisory board will guide the strategic direction of the Taproot Institute, ensuring equity and justice remain central. Key upcoming activities include:

  • Identification and recruitment of advisory board members

  • Defining clear roles and responsibilities

  • Holding the inaugural meeting to align mission and processes

4. Ongoing Support & Resources

We will develop and distribute updated templates, briefing materials, and interactive content to accompany advisory board recommendations and support community negotiations.
